Martial Arts Book Review - Deadly Karate Blows by Brian Adams

The subject of vital/vulnerable points and how to strike them is a very serious matter and one that should never be taken lightly. I personally am very leery about teaching people about them and usually only give a generalized description of them. There are two books that attempt to tackle this subject, both of which I currently have in my own personal library. One of them is Brian Adam?s, ?Deadly Karate Blows.?

Now before I get started on writing the actual review of this book, I am going to take this opportunity to give you a bit of insight into my reviewing process. I will rarely if ever give a bad review. This isn?t meant to imply that I think that everything is good, it?s just that if I don?t care for a particular book or DVD that I have, I simply will not do a review on it. What I primarily look for in an instructional book or DVD is its ability to teach me solid relevant information on the particular topic being addressed, which should be the primary focus of the material being presented. Unfortunately, this isn?t always the case.

Now depending upon your own personal knowledge on the subject, and your own personal perspective, you will either love this book or revile it. While I myself readily question some of the material presented in this book, I do find a lot of it to be very informative in both a positive and a negative way. Rather than dwelling on the negative aspects, I will instead focus on the positive aspects of this book.

The basic format for this book starts out with two to three photographs with captions and two subjects demonstrating a particular technique whose attack is focused on a particular vital/vulnerable point. This is followed by some pretty good illustrations and description of the various possible injuries that can accompany a blow to the particular vital/vulnerable point being discussed. Each section starts out with the weapon used, the target (vital/vulnerable point) attacked, and the possible medical implications of an effective attack. The only real detractor to this is that it should be updated to provide more current and relevant information.

One could easily argue that a lot of the information provided is sketchy at best and not very detailed at all. This is a legitimate point. However, and this is just my opinion, I think the author was just trying to give the reader an overview of the subject, rather than a detailed analysis.

During the introduction to this book, the author is adamant about making it clear that, ??I have just barely scratched the surface of a subject that will continue to regain its status in the martial arts.? The author also makes it very clear that, ?One must remember that whenever the human element is involved, there is no such thing as absolute perfection. This is why in many of the sections it is indicated that there is more than one possible result, because the blow may be slightly off target or because of other existing conditions which might be hindered by unforeseen circumstances.?

Although this book is definitely not an ?authoritative? piece, it still holds value especially when combined with another book called, ?Gray?s Anatomy.?

Shawn Kovacich has been practicing the martial arts for over 25 years and currently holds the rank of 4th degree (Yodan) black belt in both Karate and Tae Kwon Do. Shawn has also competed in such prestigious full-contact bare knuckle karate competitions as the Shidokan Open and the Sabaki Challenge, among others. In addition to his many accomplishments, Shawn is also a two time world record holder for endurance high kicking as certified by the Guinness Book of World Records. Shawn is the author of Crescent Kick the fourth volume in the highly acclaimed Achieving Kicking Excellence? series. of martial arts books, and is currently working on several additional marital arts and self-defense books. Which are due to be released in 2007.

Kodokan Judo: The Essential Guide to Judo by Its Founder Jigoro Kano

Kodokan Judo: The Essential Guide to Judo by Its Founder Jigoro Kano
Judo, or the Way of Gentleness, an ideal form of physical exercise and a reliable system, of self-defense, was specially created from traditional Japanese martial arts. This book by the creator of Kodokan judo is uniquely comprehensive and the most authoritative guide to this martial art ever
published.

Over a hundred years ago Jigoro Kano mastered swordsmanship and hand-to-hand combat. Failing to discover any underlying principle, he set about designing a new martial art to reflect the concept of maximum efficiency in the use of physical and mental energy. Today, the concepts and techniques of
judo taught at the Kodokan are the ones originally devised by their creator and collected together in this book. Covering everything from the fundamental techniques to prearranged formal exercises for both men and women, the book offers detailed explanations of how techniques are combined in two
types of practice: randori (free practice) and kata (the practice of forms). In addition to a discussion of traditional methods of resuscitation, the book concludes with a useful appendix of information on the founder and the Kodokan International Judo Center, and a glossary of judo terminology.
Fully illustrated throughout, Kodokan Judo will help students and instructors everywhere to discover the principles, techniques, and spirit of this popular martial art.

Bruce Lee's Fighting Method, Vol. 2: Basic Training (Bruce Lee's Fighting Method)
"If you are going to train without the concept that this is the real thing, you are short changing yourself." --Bruce Lee

Bruce Lee's Fighting Method: Basic Training reveals how the iconic warrior attained his legendary speed, power and footwork. Included are practical, effective stretches for increasing flexibility, abdominal exercises that can be performed anywhere, and hard-hitting advice on running, biking, skipping rope and shadowboxing.

But Basic Training is more than just a fitness guide. This must-have manual also delves into the fundamental aspects of Bruce Lee's revolutionary combat philosophy, jeet kune do, including how to strengthen your firsts with iron-palm training, get the most out of your punches and kicks, camouflage your attacks, develop the footwork to evade almost any blow, cover distance rapidly, escape from a tight corner, conserve energy for countering, build muscles without sacrificing speed, fix flaws in your stance and improve your peripheral vision, leverage and timing.

As the second volume in Bruce Lee's Fighting Method, Basic Training contains detailed illustrations and vintage photos capturing Lee in his prime. This essential series, compiled and organized by his close friend, Mito Uyehara, is the perfect companion to Bruce Lee's classic text, Tao of Jeet Kune Do. The Bruce Lee's Fighting Method series is an integral part of the Bruce Lee canon and a necessary addition for collectors and martial arts enthusiasts alike.

Combat Jujitsu-Why Is It The Fastest Growing Martial Art In The World

Combat Jujitsu is one of the hottest trends in martial arts today. In fact, a lot of martial arts masters are creating a new and unique form of all martial arts known as combat martial arts. Learning combat Jujitsu can have a lot of benefits.

Jujitsu is a very skilled martial arts that uses a lot of different moves such as holds, mounting, grappling, takedowns, and a whole lot more. If you are persistent, determined and disciplined you can learn Combat Jujitsu and experience an entirely new level of personal development through it.

Jujitsu is an ancient martial art originating from the country of Japan, and was created in the 1500s. The ancient martial art of Jujitsu combines all of the grappling, holds, mounting, and takedown moves with relaxing and beneficial meditations.

Judo was actually developed from the ancient martial art of Jujitsu in the 1800s by a man named Jigoro Kano. Jigoro Kano took a variety of different techniques from other masters of Jujitsu and meshed them together into Judo. Kano called this form of Jujitsu and Judo ?Kadokan Judo?. Kano soon found out that his dog's breakfast version of Jujitsu wasn?t as great as he thought it was. His students could not defeat the Jujitsu students in any of the competitions they engaged in. Kano knew it was time for a change, and he chose to add some more skills to his form of Judo ? joint locking techniques, choking techniques and holds. One of Kano?s students eventually moved to the beautiful country of Brazil and brought his unique form of Jujitsu and Judo to the country with him. From there, the martial arts of Jujitsu and Judo spread throughout the world.

Combat Jujitsu takes the original Jujitsu and creates a martial arts that has a lot more combat involved, especially self-defense moves. Learning self-defense in any form of martial art is a great benefit. It can even save your life. It will give you the confidence you need to know that you can protect yourself and those around you. You do not need to be scared anymore. You will learn how to watch out for situations you need to get away from, how to escape an attacker trying to hurt you, feel more confident and self-reliant when you go out. Also, you can have a lot of fun learning combat Jujitsu while you are becoming a healthier person overall.

Practicing combat Jujitsu on a regular basis will help you in self-defense and meditation. You will also reduce your risks for many debilitating diseases. In an age of fast food, fast cars, no sleep, 500 channels and road rage, learning this martial art will have countless benefits!

CQC SERPA Holster- Pebble Finish- Colt 1911 and clones, RH
This unique holster design allows you to forget old-fashioned thumb breaks that slow your draw and complicate re-holstering. The patented SERPA lock engages the trigger guard as you holster the pistol and wont let go until you release it. The release is made using your normal drawing motion, with the trigger finger beside the holster body.

As your trigger finger naturally comes to rest on the SERPA locks release mechanism, simply push the mechanism as you draw the weapon and it releases the gun for a smooth, fast draw. No awkward use of a middle finger release or thumb break to interfere with a full combat grip, the SERPA lock lets you draw the weapon quickly while establishing a full grip from start to finish.

Unlike thumb breaks, which can sometimes be difficult to fasten one-handed, the SERPA lock allows you to re-holster quickly and securely every time, using only one hand. The SERPA holster has the same speed cut and concealment enhancing design of our Standard Model Carbon Fiber Holster.

For Greater Success-Not Just in Martial Arts and Self-Defense - Learn to Think Outside the Box

I, like many, have some videos up on YouTube. If you are one of the remaining few who haven't heard of this oasis of information on tons of topics in video format, including martial arts and self-defense, you really owe it to yourself to check it out. It's kind of like a giant blog, but where the posts are video uploads instead of text articles.

Just as with conventional blogs, viewers may comment on the videos they watch. And, mine are no different. But, I digress. This article is not about YouTube.com, but about...

...perspective, and the way we look at things.

One of the primary comments left behind by self-proclaimed experts, especially regarding my traditional ninjutsu techniques, is that...

...the technique is somehow wrong.

It can be wrong for any number of reasons, but the common implication that comes screaming through their post is that...

...it's not the way they were taught.

The sad part here is that, most of these gurus have little-to-no actual self-defense experience under their belts (pun intended!). And those who do, are almost exlusively limited to one or more of the following:

  • School-yard scuffles (where it's more a show of "cool" than it is about saving life and limb),

  • Bar room brawls (which are almost identical to the school yard incidents with alcohol), and...

  • Martial arts tournaments (where the rules and referee intervention makes it nearly impossible to experience real fight pressure)

Nope. For most martial arts students and those enrolled into self-defense classes, the realities inherent and existing within a violent attack when facing an enraged assailant is as foreign as the feeling of weightlessness in the near-zero gravity one would be required to experience when walking on the moon!

This ignorance of what is to be dealt with in a fight leads most students (and teachers, by the way) to confuse the conceptual models, known as "kata" in the martial arts of Japan, with a fight itself. So, they do what most "children" do when they are taught something...

...they make it an unbreakable "rule."

We have many of these "rules," or conventions in our society. They effect our lives each and every moment of every day. Included are things like:

  • how we hold our eating utensils

  • how, and with whom, we shake hands or hug

  • who we see as responsible for household chores

  • and so much more.

In most martial arts and self-defense classes, this mindset is simply perpetuated to include the skills, models, and lessons originally designed to save one's life on the battlefield. But, where most of the conventions adopted in everyday life merely cause a bit of confusion when we see someone doing a thing differently...

...falling prey to this mindless trap in our self-protection training can literally get us killed in the real-world.

So, just what are some of the limiting habits and views that keep students at the "beginner" level, regardless of their rank in the martial arts? To be honest, there are tons of them. But, let's take a look at just a couple to give you an idea of how deep the proverbial rabbit-hole goes.

As I said, the primary one that I deal with from the "masters" who comment on my videos is...

It's not being done correctly. Ignoring the fact that the technique is being offered as an example of the training, and in a world (YouTube) where beginners run rampant, they offer less-than-constructive comments like... "Too slow," or "the opponent's attack was wrong," etc.

Can you imagine! Actually believing that you have some sense of control of how an assailant will attack you?!

I'm not talking about whether he throws a punch or kick based on a controlled opening that you leave for him. I'm talking about getting him to throw a kick from your "style" when his past experience was with Tae kwon do, Jujitsu, Western boxing, or just picked up instictively off the street.

Can you imagine?

And yet, there are hundreds of thousands of martial arts students and teachers who will absolutely, with every breath of their being, resist practicing or acknowledging a technique that does not look like the way "their" teacher performed it.

I only hope that these folks carry their notebook or portable DVD player with them so they can show the "right" attack to the assailant who's about to change their view of reality!

But, I digress again.

Some other examples of "boxed" thinking, or "conventional" mindtraps, that routinely cripple otherwise well-meaning students attempting to master the ancient warrior skills are...

Always holding a weapon the same way. Things like always holding a knife with the edge down as if you're about to cut steak is one example of this. Reverse grip aside, some people actually experience a physical discomfort when they see a Ninja stab with a knife...

...with the edge UP!

Now, if you know what's going on, and this kind of thing causes you to stop and think...

...can you imagine what a thing like that will do to YOUR ATTACKER?!

And finally...

Restricting your training to your "style" or brand of martial arts. Most students fall into the ego-generated belief that...

"...if this thing I'm doing weren't right and best, I wouldn't be doing it."

Of course, what they're really saying is...

"...I have chosen this thing, and because "I" CAN'T be wrong, it HAS to be right!"

As a result, they refuse to even look at other styles or methods. And if they do, they usually look through a filtered perception that would prevent them from learning anything new or useful.

I'm not saying that they have to practice the new thing. But, knowing what other people are capable and, more importantly, "willing" to do to you, will allow you to get outside the box that somehow has you convinced that you'll be attacked by a 21st century mugger in a method that was developed for a 16th century Japanese Samurai wearing his own body weight in armor!

The point here is simple. It was summed up by one of my Sargeants when I was in the Army, who said...

"...flexibility is the key to longevity."

Anyone with real-world experience knows this. They also know that you can have tons of information and academic knowledge, but without experience you may find that all you have is empty theory.

No. To truly be effective, you must be able to apply the "principles and concepts" of success in any realm to get the results that you need. The kata, or "forms" of any martial art style are merely vehicles for presenting those key elements needed for survival. Just like the lessons we received in childhood were guides until we could comprehend things from a more mature, worldly view, they're not the lesson itself. So...

...for greater success, not just in your ability to survive, but in every area of your life...

...Learn to think outside the box.

Why Did Skinny Little Royce Gracie Launch Mixed Martial Arts?

Could be luck - nope not luck. I first caught wind of this guy, Royce (pronounced like Hoyce - hey, don?t ask me, the guy is Brazilian!) Gracie at the first ever Ultimate Fighting Championship. I was pretty impressed, I must say.

First off, for a little history lesson. The Gracies go way back in the world of Jujitsu. When young Royce was just a kid, his grandfather Helio taught him everything he needed to know to kick butt. At age eight, little Royce started competing in tournaments. And he started winning all the time.

So, here I am at the first ever UFC tournament watching this guy I never heard of armbaring men so much larger than he was, they looked like they could eat him for breakfast. I remember thinking, is this hombre for real? He is 180 pounds, but a wirey 180, you know? He was skinny and did not look too strong. He certainly was not muscular or anything.

You see, I always heard you get two guys, both of them skilled and the bigger hombre wins, 9 times out of 10. That is how it is supposed to work, right? Not with Royce. I saw him get hammered one time against a monster named Dan Severn. He must have outweighed Gracie close to fifty kilos! Severn picked Gracie up and slammed him back down to the mat a dozen times. He was on top of him the whole match. But right at the last second, old Danny boy taps out! I and the rest of us onlookers couldn?t believe what happened. Gracie got him in an arm bar and that was that. Victory for Gracie and Brazilian Jujitsu. Everyone was shocked.

Up until then, no one really understood the importance of submissions and ground attacks in martial arts. No one had done the types of things Gracie did. No one understood them. But after Gracie captured three UFC titles, people were paying attention then, believe you me! It changed the world of MMA. Technique was critical from that point on. Everybody was scrambling to figure the next best triangle choke to get their opponents to tap out like Royce was doing to everyone. The smaller man now had an advantage if he had a complete jujitsu game.

So MMA took notice of a fighting style that had been perfected by the Gracie family for seventy years. Watching him battle with guts and skill made me a big fan of the sport. The sport received publicity and legitimacy the day he hit the scene. When he won the tournament and starting setting records, it was like everyone else came on board and the sport blew up in popularity from there. The world of mixed martial arts would not be what it is today without Royce and his family doing what they did for the sport.

Bushido: The Way of the Samurai (Square One Classics)

Bushido: The Way of the Samurai (Square One Classics)
In eighteenth-century Japan, Tsunetomo Yamamoto created the Hagakure, a document that served as the basis for samurai warrior behavior. Its guiding principles greatly influenced the Japanese ruling class and shaped the underlying character of the Japanese psyche, from businessmen to soldiers.

Bushido is the first English translation of the Hagakure. This work provides a powerful message aimed at the mind and spirit of the samurai warrior. It offers beliefs that are difficult for the Western mind to embrace, yet fascinating in their pursuit of absolute service. With Bushido, one can better put into perspective Japan's historical path and gain greater insight into the Japan of today.

When you are ready, you venture out into a fear-ridden Hong Kong, now under Po's merciless control. It's a fight for your life. Every steamy alleyway and ramshackle bar hides another of Po's henchman out for blood. Each step brings you closer to battle; every jump kick could mean the difference between life and death. You are the city's only hope. And yet you know what you must do: learn well and never, ever forget that through you, Bruce Lee Lives.

Martial Arts Flexibility - Doing The Splits Is Easy With PNF Stretching

Are flexibility exercises a real pain for you? Until I discovered something called PNF Stretching, they used to be for me, too!

It means, "Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation." Fancy words that, in essence, mean you make dramatic gains in how limber you are when you combine relaxed, passive stretches with isometrics.

Yes, dramatic gains. Believe me--I know from experience!

My martial arts students think I'm pretty flexible, but the truth is, I was never a naturally flexible athlete. If anyone has ever struggled with flexibility, it's me! In fact, when I started practicing Martial Arts in my early twenties I was so out-of-shape I didn?t know my hamstrings from a ham sandwich!

And let me tell you, I had a tough time learning how to get loose enough just to lob a regular round kick to my own head height.

Maybe this has been you?re experience, too: I would arrive an hour before my scheduled class time, sit on the floor off to one side of the room, doing stretch after stretch after stretch until I could finally do the high kicking my belt rank required.

And the next time I came back to class, I had to do it all over again?

And again?and again?

Why Passive Static Stretching Doesn't Work

And a curious thing?after all that stretching, instead of feeling ready to get out there and do a good workout, I always felt a bit sleepy.

The reason is obvious to me now. What I didn?t know was that all that passive exercise stretching was helping me to slow down, not warm up!

Why? Because in passive exercise stretching, lengthening of the muscles is accomplished by relaxing them, with a little bit of help from applying your body?s weight to the point where you feel the "burn."

All that relaxation along with deep breathing during the stretch is great for winding down after a workout?or for that matter, as a cure for insomnia.

Believe me, I know how frustrating it can be to try to achieve Martial Arts flexibility that carries over into your "off hours." And when it comes to Personal Safety, that?s where you really need it the most.

There's Got To Be A Better Way

It was also frustrating to see other, more flexible people toss their kicks around like their legs and hips were made of rubber. I started thinking, There?s got to be a better way to get flexible!

And there is. After researching many articles and books, and videos, I discovered that Stretching isn?t just Stretching. In fact, there are several kinds of flexibility techniques:

  • Passive
  • Active
  • Static
  • Dynamic
  • Ballistic
  • Resistance PNF

Passive stretching is okay after a workout, but doesn?t do much to prepare you for high kicks. In fact, what I eventually learned was that most of the improvements to my kicking range came through sparring and heavy bag work.

That?s right?although you can help prevent injuries and cramps by passive stretching before a workout, it does very little to improve your high kicking ability.

So why did sparring and bag workouts work instead?

Because when you?re kicking?that is elongating the muscles involved?then suddenly contracting them with isometric resistance (by your opponent?s block, or your contact with the bag) the resistance during the stretch is what really causes the muscle to elongate!

PNF: The Key To Incredible Kicking Range

Maybe like you, I searched books, videos, and web sites until I finally learned this lesson about isometric resistance in flexibility. And if you haven?t done a ton of research yet, let me save you some time!

The answer I found was in Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation. This type of flexibility exercise is done by alternating passive with isometric stretching.

How PNF Works

Isometric flexibility is when you passively extend the muscle to the point where you start to feel the "burn," and then contract the muscle. Introducing tension to a passively lengthened muscle sort of "tricks" the muscle into thinking it can maintain this longer length. After the isometric, the muscle will relax further into the passive stretch. Regular, continued practice of PNF stretching produces the fastest and most dynamic results for the flexibility you need to practice Martial Arts.

Try These Two Easy Stretching Exercises

These two, easy PNF exercises will get you started on a path to amazing Martial Arts flexibility.

  1. Side Splits
Start in a traditional horse stance. Keep your toes pointing straight ahead. Tilt your pelvis forward and keep your back upright. Try to keep your thighs parallel to the ground as much as possible during this stretch!

Work your way down until you start to feel pain, and no further. Now tense your leg muscles for 3 to 5 seconds, then relax. If you are able, go down a little bit more. Tense and relax the muscles again. Do this four times. On the fourth time, try to tense and hold for 30 seconds.

Repeat this whole sequence 3 to 5 times. You should not do this before you are warmed up. The best time for the Isometric Side Splits is during or near the end of your regular workout, then do passive stretching at the very end.

  2. Front Splits
As great as it is to be able to do the Side Splits, Front Splits is probably even better for Martial Arts. If you consider the position of your body when doing a round or front kick to the head, the Front Splits more closely resembles that position than Side Splits.

Start by extending one leg straight out in front of you. Position your rear leg so that it lines up with the front.

It helps if you support your weight with a chair off to one side. Be very careful how far you stretch the hamstring of the front leg. The ability to perform this splits isn?t only in having a limber hamstring, but also flexibility of the front thigh muscles (quadriceps).

For the isometric part of this exercise, tense both the hamstring of the front leg and the thigh muscles of the rear leg at the same time, as if you're trying to pinch the floor with your front heel and back knee. Hold for 3 to 5 seconds.

Relax...go a little further if you can. Tense and hold again. On the fourth time, try to tense and hold for 30 seconds.

As with the Side Split exercise, repeat this sequence 3 to 5 times.

Developing great flexibility doesn't have to be a pain--in fact, when you learn how, it's really a lot of fun and very rewarding! These exercises will get you started on a journey toward amazing flexibility for Martial Arts practice. In no time, you will be able to kick targets at your own head level with remarkable ease.

These Martial Arts Exercises Will Improve Strength, Power, Speed, Quickness And Jumping Ability

When thinking of exercising you need to think about Martial Arts exercises, in specific, Hapkido Training. These Exercises help to improve Martial Arts. The benefits of doing this exercise is the fact you are working out and you do not get out breath doing these. You will also learn, as I did, self-defense in the process. Knowing how to protect you and your loved ones is an excellent motivator; I know it was for me. These exercises will increase your cardiovascular and help tone your muscles to where you can increase your strength, power, speed, quickness and jumping abilities.

I noticed that my flexibility was greatly improved which lessened the over all discomfort and stiffness associated with many other exercises. The kickboxing itself will help improve your mobility.

I also noticed that my overall outlook on life was greatly improved, which made my days more enjoyable and pleasurable. Many people comment that their anger is increased by not feeling well, or due to a lack of energy.

As a parent of a child who takes martial arts, you might notice that his or her attitude about everything is better along with improved schoolwork. You might even notice that his or her other sports activities improved and he or she will want to participate.

These following exercises are design with specifics parts of the body and will help your Exercises to improve Martial Arts. The first exercise we will go over is the Basic Squat. To do the Basic Squat properly, you need to face directly forward, while placing your feet a little farther apart than your shoulders. Keep your upper body and back straight, with your hands in the forward fighting positions. Once you are in this position, slowly bend your knees while keeping everywhere else still. Keep your head and eyes straightforward. Once you have lowered yourself to where your thighs are parallel with the ground slowly raise back up.

Remember to start out slowly, and once you and your body get comfortable doing them, you can increase your pace and repetitions.

Next is kicking. With kicking, you should start out slowly, going to the basic first and working your way into more advanced kicks. I do not recommend jumping or round house kicks until you and your legs have adjusted properly. Also be sure to alternate from one leg to another.

Once you have mastered kicking, you can move onto Squat Kicking. To Squat Kick, you need to start out in a basic squat position and this time, when you raise up, carry out your kick starting out with your right leg first. Repeat this until you are confident enough and your legs is used to the action and then move onto your left leg.

As with any exercise, I warn you to use caution. You will also want to wear the appropriate clothing, these need to be loose enough to move around in but not too loose to where you trip over them. Each of these Exercises helps to improve Martial Arts.
