Italian Rapier-an Effective Historical Martial Art With a Growing Following

We have all heard of kendo and kenjitsu, of the lingering spirit of the old Samurai school and of the precision and effectiveness with which these Japanese martial arts are taught and learned. But did you know that European swordsmanship from the Renaissance is equally precise and, most importantly, equally effective? Did you know that there were several European Myamoto Musashis who fought tens of duels and battles without ever receiving a scratch? The Italian rapier was one of the most studied, refined and therefore effective among European martial arts, and thankfully, a growing number modern students are finding that out for themselves.

Until not long ago thinking of "fencing" meant thinking of the white-clad Olympic style sport where the defense (that essential element in martial arts) had almost completely disappeared in favor of just speed in attacks and quickness to make the buzzer sound. But then, thanks in part to the efforts of dedicated individuals like John Clements and his HACA (now ARMA), Americans came to realize that there was a whole treasure of literature on true European martial arts: books from the Renaissance that taught, blow by blow and principle by principle, how to fight sword-in-hand. Therefore many people started a feverish process of research and, armed with precise blunted replicas of Renaissance rapiers or swords, started testing their conclusions in informal tournaments. The results were exciting.

Studying the Italian Rapier

The Italian rapier is a double-edged sword popular in the late 1500 and 1600s, and it is immediately recognizable by its complex hilt consisting often of bars and sweeping branches. The greatness of the Italian rapier is that it could be used on its own, that is, without armor, shield or other defensive armament. This is why (although this is a generalization), the science of fencing made great strides in the time of the Italian rapier. Many masters from the Renaissance left us Italian rapier manuals, such as Fabris, Giganti, Capoferro, Alfieri and many others. Even outside of Italy, the rapier become very popular, so much so that old-fashioned Nationalists (such as the English George Silver) published some grumbling essays against it. But history could not be stopped, and the Italian rapier became the sword of choice of much of Europe's nobility and upper middle class.

Today, the Italian rapier revival centers among many schools headed by amateur researchers or in rare cases even professional teachers, both in the USA and abroad. When you see two good fencers engaged in Italian rapier combat, you see two agile mountain lions studying each other from just out of distance, then one quickly gaining an advantage with his weapon over the other, safely attacking with a thrust or more rarely a cut, and placing the burden of defense over the opponent. Defense can be executed either in the form of a parry-riposte or in an action in countertime, that is, with the parry and the riposte performed in a single motion.

Studying the Italian rapier involves nothing different from many other martial arts: a fit body (especially the legs), a solid understanding of the theory and lots of hours of repetitive drilling, until the actions become second nature. Then, once the rapier is mastered, students can begin adding a left-hand dagger, a cape or even a shield to learn to control two weapons and to deceive two in the opponent's hands.

But this kind of study really pays off. Often, at International Martial Arts conventions, you will see a skillful Italian rapier fencer matched against an equally skilled Japanese swordsmanship practitioner, and it is a joy to watch how conservative, precise and (in many cases) similar the two contenders motions will be. Who wins? Sometime one, sometimes the other, but always the most skilled.

How Can You Become Involved in Italian Rapier Studies?

My advice is to do an Internet search for European Swordsmanship schools, and see what's available in your area. Please note: although many Italian rapier practitioners are also involved in the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism), authentic Italian rapier combat is very different from the sport and its rules practiced in the SCA. So if it's authenticity you are looking for, the SCA may not be your best bet, although you may meet some good leads there. Also, there are other resources like Swordforum International or the ARMA forum (both searchable) where you may ask questions and find practice partners in your area. I'll leave you with one last piece of advice: if you want to study the Italian rapier seriously, find out as much information as possible and don't just go with the first group that "lures" you in. Also, you may want to attend one of the large International Western Martial Arts symposia, where you can take lessons from some of today's best Italian rapier teachers as will see these arts in action.

Lastly, there are a growing number of available books on the Italian rapier. These range from English translations of the historic works of Fabris, Capoferro and others to interpretations and advice from modern students and teachers. A quick search on Amazon on the topics rapier, dueling, etc. will yield good results.

Martial Arts DVD Review - Lock On Joint Locking Essentials, Vol. 1 Wrist Locks by Alain Burrese

One of the first things that jumped out at me from the onset when I started watching Alain?s ?Lock On? series of DVD?s was the simple yet effective approach that he took in the production and presentation of this series of DVD?s. My initial impression was one of being in an actual seminar environment while Alain was teaching instead of merely watching an instructional DVD. You won?t find any pointless or ineffective ?bells and whistles? with this series; instead what you will find is good quality instruction covering a wide array of joint locking techniques. This particular DVD focuses on wrist locking techniques.

Alain?s ability to instruct you on these simple, yet effective wrist locking techniques is the hallmark of a good instructor and it certainly shows in this series. Alain?s approach is straightforward and easy to follow as he takes you through each wrist lock numerous times in order to teach you how to execute each technique correctly. Alain takes great care in his teachings to explain to you how some of these techniques, although they may appear to be ineffective, can actually be quite effective if applied under the right set of circumstances.

I?m going to take a brief moment here to jump ahead to the end of this DVD where Alain explains the three (3) key elements that need to be present in order for these techniques to be effective. Although each one of these key elements is vitally important in their own right, none of them is exclusive in importance to the others when it comes to applying these wrist locks effectively in a combat or self-defense situation. What you have to remember is that these three (3) key elements have to be combined in order to form a symbiotic entity that is only effective when utilized together in an efficient manner.

These three (3) key elements are as follows:

    1. Surprise: If your opponent doesn?t know what to expect, he is going to have a more difficult time defending against it. However, if your opponent knows what is coming, he is going to be more readily able to counter it, or avoid it all together.

    2. Speed: Executing the techniques shown on this DVD has to be done as fast as possible while still retaining the third key element, which is proper technique. If the technique is executed too slowly, then your opponent will have the opportunity to figure out what you are doing and, as is in the case of surprise, be able to counter it or avoid the technique all together.

    3. Proper Technique: This should literally be a ?no-brainer,? but unfortunately that doesn?t seem to be the case. I don?t know how many times I have personally seen or heard of someone trying to apply a particular technique in a given self-defense type situation when they weren?t even executing the technique correctly to begin with. Alain goes to extreme lengths in this series to implore you to practice, practice, and practice, until the techniques he demonstrates become second nature to you where you can execute them correctly without thought or hesitation.

Alain follows the same instructional format for each one of the various wrist locks shown in this DVD. He starts out by explaining some of the finer points of executing each technique followed by various follow up techniques that can be used on your opponent, if it is needed, after the wrist lock has been applied. He then shows several variations of each wrist lock that all are based on the primary wrist lock that was first shown.

Alain takes a very realistic approach to the use of wrist locks and attempts to cover several influencing factors that may or may not come into play while attempting to apply them in a real life situation. I myself watched this DVD on three separate occasions and found something that I had previously missed each time. I have no doubt that were I to watch this DVD again after writing this review that I would find something else that I had previously missed.

One of the many great things that I really enjoy about Alain?s teaching style is his, what I like to refer to as, ?nuggets of wisdom? that he injects throughout his instruction process. I too use this in my own personal style of teaching and have found that it is very effective teaching technique.

I have a rather large collection of instructional videos that I have accumulate over the years and I can say without reservation that Alain?s ?Lock On? series is one of the best I have seen so far on the subject of joint techniques. If I were to have only one comment to make on this series, it would be this, ?Hurry up and make the rest of them!?

The hand wraps are designed to meet professional and amateur requirements.

    About Everlast
The name Everlast is synonymous with boxing. Renown internationally as a manufacturer of boxing equipment, Everlast started out as a swimwear manufacturer in 1910. Headquartered in the Bronx, NY, the company was founded by 17-year-old Jacob Golomb. The son of a tailor and an avid swimmer, Jacob Golomb was dissatisfied with the durability of swimsuits because they barely lasted a season, so he began making suits that he guaranteed would last for a full year. He proudly gave them the name, Everlast. Although the swimsuits did not last through the years, the name did.

Over the next years, Golomb expanded his company into a small retail store that carried a full line of sports equipment. In 1917, a young fighter named Jack Dempsey introduced boxing to Golomb and Everlast. Dempsey asked Golomb to construct protective headgear that would last more than 15 rounds of intensive boxing training. Golomb specially designed the training gear for Dempsey. In 1919, Dempsey won the world's heavyweight championship wearing boxing gloves made for him by Golomb. Everlast became the headquarters for boxing equipment throughout the world. In 1925, Golomb designed elastic-waist trunks to replace the leather-belted trunks then worn by boxers. These trunks, now known as boxer trunks, immediately became famous. Jacob Golomb ran the business until he passed away in the early 1950's and his son, Dan, took over. In 1958, Ben Nadorf joined Everlast and purchased 50% of the company from the Golomb family. When Dan Golomb passed away in 1995, Nadorf purchased the family's remaining 50% interest. Nadorf remained the President and Principle Share Holder of Everlast until October 24, 2000.

Everlast men's and women's apparel and accessories continue today to be tremendously successful both inside and outside the ring. In addition, Everlast boxing trunks and equipment remain the proud and undefeated champion of the boxing industry for more than 90 years. The history continues, as the name states. Various Styles of Martial Arts

There are many different types of Martial Arts and whilst we may have heard of types such as Judo and Karate, there are also different styles of Martial Arts to choose from. The most common seems to be Japanese but there are others too, so how can you tell which Martial Arts style would suit you the best?

    The Different Styles Available

When it comes to Martial Arts there are four main styles which are Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Phillippino styles. Each one teaches the Martial Arts differently and some are more common than others.

    * Japanese Style Martial Arts

The Japanese Style Martial Arts focus on self defense and they are generally a way of helping the body to create spiritual harmony. Usually throwing and twisting techniques are used and you learn how to use your attacker's strength against them. So, even if your attacker is stronger than you, you will learn how to use that in your favor.

This is one of the gentlest forms of Martial Arts and whilst there is some pressure on vital nerve techniques used, it is not taught in order to attack or hurt your opponent as with some other types of Martial Arts.

    * Korean Style Martial Arts

Korean Martial Arts were used previously by Korean soldiers. Due to their knowledge of Martial Arts, it made them feared by other countries, hence they were known as some of the best soldiers in the world. With this in mind it is important to note that the Korean styles of Martial Arts were actually designed for battle unlike the Japanese version which was designed to simply protect, not to fight.

    * Phillippino Style Martial Arts

This type of Martial Arts focuses on using weapons such as a short stick. It is used for both sport and self defense reasons and it is not generally as popular as other Martial Art styles.

    * Chinese Style Martial Arts

The Chinese Martial Arts style is generally Tai Chi. It is used for both exercise and self defense reasons and it is supposed to provide a sense of calm to those who follow it. Some schools teach with the use of weapons whereas some schools teach without them. Both ways are acceptable and it all depends upon personal preference as to which type of Tai Chi you want to partake in.

Overall the different styles do make a difference to the types of Martial Arts and how they are practiced. It is completely down to personal preference as to which one you choose and remember that each style has its own benefits.

    Jackie Chan's Crime Force (Dub)

    Jackie Chan's Crime Force (Dub)
Jackie Chan's most dramatic work casts him as a no-nonsense undercover cop on the trail of a ruthless gang of kidnappers who discovers that a respected figure in his own department may be involved with the criminals. In this film based on a true story, director Kirk Wong brings a gritty sense of realism to the action-filled police thriller while allowing plenty of opportunities for Jackie to show his stuff, notably in the bravura climax, a solo battle with the gang that culminates in a raging fire that devours a creaky apartment complex around them. Wong's sleek, hard-edged style meshes well with Jackie's acrobatic vigor, and Chan proves to be an adept and effective dramatic performer. However, fans expecting his trademark physical gags and comic interludes may be disappointed. This is a startlingly different side of the versatile Mr. Chan, and his performance helps make this grim "policier" one of the best serious Hong Kong action thrillers to date. --Sean Axmaker

    A Force of One

    A Force of One
From the writer of "The French Connection" comes a martial arts battle of vengeance and honor. Black Mask

    Black Mask
Take the art direction and set design from The Crow and Batman. Add a male-bonding element reminiscent of The Killer or Hard-Boiled. Stir in a plot line about some top-secret near-invincible bionic-man superwarriors taking over the drug trade in Hong Kong, with only one man who can stop them. Season with a high body count, lots of explosions and running gun battles, and spectacular hand-to-hand fight sequences. Top off with a soupçon of cheesy comic relief and a generous helping of atrocious dubbing. Bake for too long, then remove from oven and allow to cool until thoroughly stale. The result: Black Mask. Sure, it's a preposterous recipe (bet you didn't know that LED readouts will show up on an X-ray), but it's stylishly prepared and presented, with high-octane editing, wild camera angles, and a neo-Goth feel all around. Of course it's all about the remarkable Jet Li, the fight scenes, and the postindustrial art direction. Those who come expecting a high-concept, intelligent thriller will be left with indigestion, but Hong Kong action fans who live and die for insane stunts and head-spinning martial arts scenes will have their appetites sated by this dish. It's very interesting to see the influence that John Woo's hand continues to have on American and HK action thrillers, years after his seminal films with Chow Yun-fat. It'll be even more interesting to see how films like Black Mask hold up in the future. Just don't take it too seriously and this movie works just fine. Oh, and the title? It comes from when Jet Li switches from his mild-mannered librarian persona to butt-kicking superhero, complete with mask and hat à la The Green Hornet's Cato. --Jerry Renshaw

Getting A Kick Out Of Different Martial Arts, Part 2

What happens when you combine techniques from the different forms of martial arts? You get what is called Mixed Martial Arts, which is also commonly known as MMA. Mixed Martial Arts is a combination of a variety of styles of the art, in which opponents attempt to overpower the other using a variety of techniques.

While it is a combination of a variety of techniques, the most popular techniques are those in stand up styles, clinch styles, and ground styles. Most fighters focus on a particular skill, but must have training in all skills to be successful. It is more common for fighters to have a variety of coaches that train for the various phases of combat, it is not common place nowadays for a fighter to specialize in one specific area of combat.

Because mixed martial arts is a recognized sport, with two specific organizations, the PRIDE Fighting Championships and the Ultimate Fighting Championship, there are rules and regulations.

For example, weight classes are a requirement in these rules, they pair like weights with other like weights to make fights more fair. In these rules there are a variety of fouls and penalties as well. These rules were designed to eliminate the picture of barbaric fighting, in which two people fight to the death, as many people once believe mixed martial arts to be. These fouls were designed to protect the fighters. Penalties are awarded to the fighter for fish hooking, biting, pulling hair, gouging eyes, and head butting.

Attacks to the groin is illegal in mixed martial arts, as well as strikes to the kidneys, spinal area, and the back of an opponents head. The trachea is off limits as well, a fighter may not grab or strike the trachea of the opponent. Joint manipulation, such as toes and fingers, is allowed. There are many rules, this area has only touched the surface, but you can basically get the idea that mixed martial arts is a controlled and very regulated sport, designed for the physical fitness and enjoyment of the sport, with the health of the fighter in mind.

    Twin Dragons
The world's greatest action hero, Jackie Chan (RUSH HOUR 1&2, RUMBLE IN THE BRONX), delivers twice the excitement and twice the fun in this nonstop, stunt-filled comedy thriller! Jackie plays Boomer, a streetwise martial arts expert living in Hong Kong and his long-lost twin brother, John, a classical musician from New York! They've never met ... but when John travels to Hong Kong to give a concert, these total-opposite identical brothers become unwittingly mixed up in a hilarious case of mistaken identity! With hard-hitting martial arts thrills and endless comedy hijinks, TWIN DRAGONS packs everything you've come to love about the wildly popular movies of stuntmaster Jackie Chan.

    Gorgeous

    Gorgeous
In between the Hollywood productions Rush Hour and Shanghai Noon, Hong Kong's most popular export, Jackie Chan, returned home to indulge his romantic side in this modern fairy tale. He plays a modern Prince Charming, a big business mogul and notoriously eligible big-city bachelor to dreamy teenager Shu Qi, a girl from a Taiwan fishing village. When a heartbreaking message in a bottle washes ashore, she traces it back to Hong Kong, where she meets Jackie in the midst of a mid-ocean brawl on a luxury yacht. Hong Kong heartthrob Tony Leung has a grand time spoofing his image, playing a gay fashion photographer who "adopts" Shu Qi and helps her woo her handsome dream lover. It's a pleasant change to see 40-plus Jackie discard his usual goofy lovesick fool to play a suave swinger, but next to giggly teen Shu Qi, who proves to be a spunky and winning actress, he seems a little too mature. There are still plenty of opportunities to see Jackie in acrobatic action with a subplot involving a boyhood friend turned shady business rival, but at heart it's a sweet, silly little love song full of unabashed romantic imagery, elegant art design, snazzy fashions, and a gooey happy ending. Jackie doesn't provide his own voice in the English dubbed edition, which makes a minor dent in his charm but does little to affect the film as a whole. --Sean Axmaker

Martial Arts Book Review: Bruce Lee's Fighting Method; Volume One by Bruce Lee & M. Uyehara

Being the author of several books on the martial arts and fighting, I am always looking for books of exceptional quality to add to my library. If I have a book in my library, it's definitely worth owning. One such book is Bruce Lee?s and M. Uyehara?s, "Bruce Lee?s Fighting Method; Volume 1: Self-Defense Techniques."

As is stated in the introduction to this and the other three volumes in the series, Bruce Lee never intended for these books to be published. However, since his untimely passing, his wife Linda decided that she would allow them to be published. Something we should all be thankful for.

What I will attempt to do in this review is to give you a well-rounded grasp of what Bruce has written and demonstrated for you in this series of books. Although nothing can replace the value of a qualified and competent instructor, a well written book can still provide you with a wealth of knowledge if you know how to realize it and obtain it.

    1. Defense Against a Surprise Attack:

    a. The best defense against a surprise attack is not to be surprised by an attack.

    b. Awareness is the key and should be practiced at all times.

    c. Bruce demonstrates 4 different scenarios in which an attacker attempts to surprise him with an attack.

    2. Defense Against An Unarmed Assailant:

    a. Bruce stated that he felt you are wasting your time and energy by studying set patterns of forms (kata). On this particular point I have to agree and disagree at the same time. If you are studying the forms and practicing them for their intended purpose it is definitely not a waste of time. However, if you are studying them incorrectly, then yes I would have to agree that for the most part it would be a waste of time.

    b. Bruce demonstrates 9 different scenarios for defending yourself against an unarmed attacker.

    3. Defense Against Grabbing:

    a. The best defense against being grabbed is not to let them grab you in the first place.

    b. However, once you have been grabbed the most practical defense is to use your hands.

    c. Bruce demonstrates 16 different scenarios from which to defend from. These include wrist grabs, arm grabs, belt or pants grabs, etc.

    4. Defending Against Choke Holds and Hugs:

    a. Once again, the best defense against a choke or a hug is not to let them grab a hold of you in the first place.

    b. However, once you have been grabbed the best defense is the most simple and effective.

    c. Remember, awareness of you and your surroundings is the key.

    d. Bruce demonstrates 11 different scenarios from which to defend from. These include various chokes, bear hugs with and without your arms being pinned, etc.

    5. Self-Defense Against An Armed Assailant:

    a. ?You are at a disadvantage against someone with a weapon, so keep away from him.?

    b. You must constantly practice in order to have a chance in this type of situation.

    c. Demonstrated in this section are 9 different scenarios for defending yourself against an attacker armed with a stick or staff.

    d. Demonstrated in this section are 4 different scenarios for defending yourself against an attacker armed with a knife.

    e. Demonstrated in this section are 2 different scenarios for defending yourself against an attacker armed with a handgun.

    6. Defense Against Multiple Assailants:

    a. Defending yourself against more than one opponent at a time is always harder.

    b. However, having said that, just because there is more than one attacker doesn?t necessarily mean you are at a disadvantage. Sometimes there is a disadvantage in numbers.

    c. Bruce demonstrates 8 different scenarios from which to defend from when fighting against more than one attacker at a time.

    7. Defense from a Vulnerable Position:

    a. Always remember, ?Anything goes when defending yourself.?

    b. Bruce demonstrates 3 different scenarios from which to defend from when sitting in a chair.

    c. Bruce demonstrates 4 different scenarios from which to defend from when lying down.

Like any well written book, as much as you can learn from this book by reading it, you can learn just as much if not more by reading between the lines. I particularly enjoyed the simplicity of what Bruce was trying to relay throughout this and pretty much all of his books. What may work well for one person, may not work at all for another. Therefore, you as an individual needs to research the techniques that are out there and find those that work best for you and use them. Remember, there are no superior martial arts, only superior martial artists.

Shawn Kovacich has been practicing the martial arts for over 25 years and currently holds the rank of 4th degree (Yodan) black belt in both Karate and Tae Kwon Do. Jackie Chan's First Strike

    Jackie Chan's First Strike
Action-god Jackie Chan does his best James Bond impression with this ecstatic sequel to the classic Supercop. The bare-bones plot has Chan in pursuit of international terrorists, but the narrative quickly gives way to an unceasing barrage of insane stunt work (including a nitro-fueled ski chase and a grandiose fight scene set inside a functioning shark tank). As with most of the aging star's recent films, there is more of an emphasis placed on big, impersonal (albeit impressive) stunts rather than the close-up combat that made him famous; but the end result is still a must-see rush for longtime fans, and a great introduction for newcomers eager to see what all the well-deserved fuss is about. The scene where Jackie takes on multiple goons while armed only with a ladder is one of his most jaw-dropping set pieces ever--and that's saying quite a lot. Be sure to stick around for the closing credits of gags gone awry, which graphically prove that Chan is truly the hardest working man in show business. --Andrew Wright

Mixed Martial Arts - The New Age Boxing

Today, martial arts have become very much popular among young kids and adults alike. Different types of martial arts are being learnt by people for many reasons like self-protection, weight loss and for physical fitness. Some of the most popular martial arts are judo, karate and jujitsu. Mixed martial arts are also becoming more and more popular these days. Mixed martial arts involve the use of a combination of martial arts techniques to overpower the attacker. Mixed martial arts (MMA) championships like the Ultimate Fighting Championships and PRIDE Fighting Championships have added to the gaining popularity of this art.

Mixed martial arts and the new age boxing have their origins in martial arts like judo, karate and jujitsu. They began as experiments in which one martial arts combat technique was used against another in an attempt to find out which technique was most suitable against real life attackers. Modern martial competitions are based on these events but stricter rules have been implemented. These rules were implemented so that mixed martial arts would gain more popularity. However, there are no universal rules and rules vary from place to pace. Also there is no central organization that governs modern martial arts rules.

The most common techniques used in mixed martial arts are striking and grappling. A variety of techniques like kicking, kneeing and punching are used to strike the opponent. Grappling techniques involve throwing, sweeping and holds. As rules vary among organizations some moves may or may not be considered legal. For example, head butting and spinal locks are legally valid in some championships and illegal in others. Techniques like eye-gouging and spinal locks are not considered legal.

Participation in modern martial arts championships requires a lot of hard work and training. Training makes perfect in overpowering any sort of attack. Training also helps one to stay fit and gain confidence. It also improves one's power of character. A variety of techniques are taught during training. Boxing and kick-boxing are taught to make the standup techniques effective while jujitsu is used to dominate the ground attacks. Many styles have to be adapted to achieve success in modern martial arts. Sticking to a single technique may prove itself to be ineffective. Further, these styles have to be changed and adapted to the situation. Most of the MMA competitors learn all the styles together and independently under many coaches. Flexibility and adaptive nature play an important role in being successful. Being competent is the only key to success in modern martial arts.

The Demon's Sermon on the Martial Arts

The Demon's Sermon on the Martial Arts
The Demon said to the swordsman, "Fundamentally, man's mind is not without good. It is simply that from the moment he has life, he is always being brought up with perversity. Thus, having no idea that he has gotten used to being soaked in it, he harms his self-nature and falls into evil. Human
desire is the root of this perversity."

Woven deeply into the martial traditions and folklore of Japan, the fearsome Tengu dwell in the country's mountain forest. Mythical half-man, half-bird creatures with long noses, Tengu have always inspired dread and awe, inhabiting a liminal world between the human and the demonic, and guarding the
    most hidden secrets of swordsmanship. In The Demon's Sermon on the Martial Arts, a translation of the 18th-century samurai classic by Issai Chozanshi, an anonymous swordsman journeys to the heart of Mt. Kurama, the traditional domain of these formidable beings. There he encounters a host of demon;
through a series of discussions and often playful discourse, they reveal to him the very deepest principles of the martial arts, and show how the secrets of sword fighting impart the truths of life itself.

The Demon's Sermon opens with The discourses, a collection of whimsical fables concerned with the theme of transformation-for Chozanshi a core phenomenon to the martial artist. Though ostensibly light and fanciful, these stories offer the attentive reader ideas that subvert perceived notions of
conflict and the individual's relationship to the outside world. In the main body of work, The Sermon, Chozanshi demonstrates how transformation is fostered and nurtured through ch'i - the vital and fundamental energy that flows through all things, animate and inanimate, and the very bedrock of
Chozanshi's themes and the martial arts themselves. This he does using the voice of the Tengu, and the reader is invited to eavesdrop with the swordsman on the demon's revelations of the deepest truths concerning ch'i, the principles of yin and yang, and how these forces shape our existence. In The
Dispatch, the themes are brought to an elegant conclusion using the parable of an old and toothless cat who, like the demon, has mastered the art of acting by relying on nothing, and in so doing can defeat even the wiliest and most vicious of rats despite his advanced years.

This is the first direct translation from the original text into English by William Scott Wilson, the renowned translator of Hagakure and The Book of Five Rings. It captures the tone and essence of this classic while still making it accessible and meaningful to today's reader. Chozanshi's deep
understanding of Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Shinto, as well as his insight into the central role of ch'i in the universe, are all given thoughtful treatment in Wilson's introduction and extensive endnotes. A provocative book for the general reader, The Demon's Sermon will also prove an
invaluable addition to the libraries of all those interested in the fundamental principles of the martial arts, and how those principles relate to our existence.
