Martial Arts Book Review - Skill in Counterattacks by Pu Gill Gwon

Counterattacking is often considered the ?master?s attack? and, when executed efficiently and effectively, is without a doubt the sign of a very skilled and proficient fighter. In his book, ?Skill in Counterattacks,? Tae Kwon Do master Pu Gill Gwon demonstrates this concept to the reader in a very professional and skillful manner.

The three page preface, although way too brief, provides a great deal of useful information on the subject of counterattacking and strategy. In this section, the author compares the rules of warfare to the rules of self-defense, which for the most part are almost identical. These four rules as described by the author are as follows.

1. The strongest opponent usually wins.

2. If both opponents are equally strong, the most determined usually wins.

3. If the strength and determination of both opponents are equal, the one who seizes the initiative usually wins.

4. The opponent who successfully utilizes the element of surprise usually wins.

The author brings up a very valid and often unknown point concerning self-defense that everyone should not only understand, but also study. And that point is as follows, ?In self-defense, the same laws and principles hold equally true for both opponents. What varies, and what makes the difference between winning and losing, is the way each opponent uses them to his ability and the particular situation.? Truer words have rarely been said.

As the author so clearly states, some of the key elements needed for a successful counterattack are as follows.

1. Openings that become exposed on your opponent when he attacks.

2. Timing.

3. Avoiding the attack by the shortest distance possible.

4. Counterattacking by the shortest distance possible.

5. Always keep your eyes on your opponent.

6. Keep a calm and clear mind.

7. Initiate your counterattack as your opponent attacks.

8. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, and PRACTICE.

The author then devotes basically the entire book to demonstrations of Tae Kwon Do counterattacks against the following types of attack. He does this with a number of photos for each counterattack along with a fairly good written description of each one. After reading this book I felt that it was intended more for the black belt student in Tae Kwon Do than a beginner or even an advanced student.

1. Front Snap Kick

2. Roundhouse Kick

3. Side Kick

4. Spinning Back Kick

5. Back Turning Kick

6. Back Fist Attack

7. Jumping Right Hand Punch

8. Knifehand Strike

9. Reverse Fist Punch

As far as the counterattacks actually demonstrated in this book, I wouldn?t recommend trying to utilize the vast majority of them in an actual combat or self-defense situation. They themselves are not that practical to use even if you are a highly trained and proficient Tae Kwon Do stylist. However, having said that, the principles behind most of the counterattacks demonstrated are fairly sound. It?s just that a lot of the techniques that are utilized in the counterattacks are not that practical.

In my opinion, you would be better off studying the examples presented in this book and then figuring out what counterattacks would be more efficient not only for the situation, but also for you to implement. I would like to add however, that a lot of the counterattacks shown in this book would possibly be effective if used in a tournament.

Martial Arts Book Review - Judo Pick-Ups by Robert Van De Walle

Being the author of several books on the martial arts and fighting, I am always looking for books of exceptional quality to add to my library. If I have a book in my library, it's definitely worth owning. One such book is Robert Van De Walle?s, "Judo Pick-Ups."

Actually I guess I should revise that statement to include any and all books in the Judo Masterclass Techniques series. This series of books is absolutely amazing in its structure and presentation of the materials in each volume. Good solid information is provided in each section along with very clear and concise photographs to complement the already outstanding text.

Although the primary focus of this book is on the sporting aspect of Judo, the techniques in it can easily be modified for use in combat or self-defense situations. Although most modern schools of Judo focus on the sporting aspects, you must remember that Judo was originally derived from Jujitsu by Dr. Jigoro Kano. Therefore, with the proper knowledge and a little modification, you can easily adapt the sporting techniques of Judo back to the more self-defense oriented techniques of Jujitsu.

Pick-Ups A Personal View:

Here the author offers up his own personal views and insight into the importance and effectiveness of pick-ups. Although I must admit that I did wince a bit during his recollection of a testicle grabbing incident in which he was personally involved in, OUCH!

History of Pick-Ups:

Here the author provides you with a brief but interesting history of this particular technique and how it was, and in some cases is, still viewed by the Judo community. There are even some nice illustrations from the 17th century which demonstrate the use of the pick-up against an opponent.

The following four pick-up techniques are the focus of this book.

1. Morote-Geri

2. Sukui-Nage

3. Ura-Nage

4. Kata-Guruma

The above mentioned pick-up techniques are demonstrated in exquisite detail in this book not only in the written text, but also in the accompanying photographs. After a brief introduction of the technique, the author follows that up with a detailed analysis of the key elements needed to successfully execute that particular technique. This is followed by a comparison of the traditional, contest, and the author?s own version of how to execute the technique. It should be noted that every variation of each technique is based upon the same key elements.

The author then goes on to describe various combinations of techniques that can be used with the particular pick-up that happens to be the focus of that section. He then goes into a brief yet detailed demonstration of various counters and defenses that you can use against someone who attempts to use that particular technique against you. Each section finishes with a very brief section on training for that particular technique.

The author concludes this book with a brief demonstration of seven miscellaneous pick-ups. As I stated earlier in this review, this and all the other books in this series are outstanding and should definitely be made an integral part of your martial arts library.

Shawn Kovacich has been practicing the martial arts for over 25 years and currently holds the rank of 4th degree (Yodan) black belt in both Karate and Tae Kwon Do. Toughness And No More Pain In The Heart And Body: For Life, Dating And Martial Arts

I was 17 when life hit me in the face. I realized I wasn't a child anymore and I had to fend for myself. It turned me into a coward.

I was 20 the first time I got punched in the face. I quit. It was my second time in the boxing gym and I hated myself for days afterwards.

Two types of pain. But one way to deal with it. If you don't, you'll never achieve true happiness, love, courage and success.

This is not typical self help fluff. This is for the times when "Hey hold your chin up!" doesn't cut it. A motivational talk won't do a thing in many cases. This article will tell you, not Why, but How.

How can one person keep fighting with a broken arm when another gives up at a broken nail?

The difference is how they handle the pain.

Injury vs. Pain

Before we begin, let?s make a distinction. The injury is what happens to us (a divorce, a broken arm). Pain is what makes us suffer. To most people, they are one and the same. The key is separating the injury from the pain.

Isn?t pain what many of us suffer from - either emotional or physical? It is impossible to go through life without suffering some emotional injury. Some people don?t suffer physical pain daily, but a lot do, due to an illness or an injury.

How do we approach it? How do we reduce it? More importantly, how do we overcome it as an obstacle to our goals?

Step one: For the Physical

There is a professional boxer at my gym, and I was sparring him once. I hit him with my best shots and he kept coming and I was a lot bigger than he was. It amazed me. I asked for his secret, and the answer was surprisingly simple. ?I just don?t react to it. I think about, I acknowledge it, but I don?t feel it.?

And that?s it. He doesn?t feel the pain. Not to say that it isn?t there, but he doesn?t let it affect him, nor does he react to it. Does that mean he can?t be hurt? No. He has been knocked out in professional bouts before. But the injury stopped him, not the pain. This bears repeating: The injury is what happens to you. The pain is what you feel about the injury.

Step one: For the Emotional

This applies in exactly the same way to emotional pain as well. In fact emotional pain is easier to deal with. Let?s say you lose your job. The injury is the loss of income and stability. The pain is the fear of the future, fear of the unknown, fear of having to survive on savings, fear of what your spouse would say; the list goes on.

Once you've separated the two, the rest becomes much easier.

Martial Arts Book Review - A Bouncer's Guide to Barroom Brawling by Peyton Quinn

Being the author of several books on the martial arts and fighting, I am always looking for books of exceptional quality to add to my library. If I have a book in my library, it's definitely worth owning. One such book is Peyton Quinn's, "A Bouncer?s Guide to Barroom Brawling."

The most important thing to remember when reading this, or any book dealing with self-defense techniques, is that the principles behind the technique are far more important than the technique itself. Once again, Peyton does a great job of this, and you would do well to sit down and read this book from cover to cover several times in order to grasp what he is trying to teach you.

So without further ado, let?s get started.

1. The Ambush: Awareness and Avoidance

One of the important points that the author tries to get across to you in this section is that fighting has serious legal and medical consequences and should be avoided if at all possible. Remember, nothing is easy to do unless you?re first willing to do it. Also, learning how to avoid a potential conflict is perhaps the most important ?technique? that you can learn. It is vitally important and should be considered your first line of defense.

2. The Reality of Fighting

Here are just a few of the items of interest that are discussed in this section.

a. The sucker puncher?s strongest assets that he uses are as follows; confidence, experience, competence and tactics.

b. Some of the very real characteristics of ?Real Fights? such as; real fights are actually very sloppy compared to the ones portrayed in movies, most fights only last a few second, most fights are decided by punches to the head, most real fights involve some form of grappling, kicking (particularly above the waist) is not very effective in an actual fight.

Now I have to admit that I am not too fond of statements such as the last one that seem to knock the effectiveness of kicks in a real fight. I for one have trained extensively in kicking and have used it successfully many times in ?real fights.? However, having said that, I freely admit that the point the author is trying to get across here is actually a very good one. Most people not only don?t know how to kick properly to start with, but they have no idea on how to apply them practically in a ?real fight.?

c. The author?s observations about the martial arts versus real fighting; Peyton, in my opinion, is one of the more realistic self-defense authors out there today simply because he takes a realistic and practical approach to the effectiveness of traditional martial arts when it comes to the subject of self-defense. Unlike other authors out there that seem to knock any and every kind of formal martial art there is, Peyton freely admits there importance and value not only in self-defense, but also in every other aspect of your life. He does provide some really good ?food for thought? in this section and it was a real pleasure to read.

3. The Tool Box

This section starts out with some great advice, ?It is more important to learn how to effectively avoid getting hit, than learning how to hit effectively.?

The author then describes several different hand strikes and how to execute them. This particular section is really good and offers some very practical and worthwhile advice.

I particularly enjoyed the author?s poignant tale of a sparring session he had with a Tae Kwon Do 4th degree black belt. This is quite an amusing and interesting story, and one that you can learn a lot from, if you know how to read between the lines. The author then finishes this section with some more discussion on hand, elbow, and knee strikes.

4. Principles of Defense

The single most noteworthy piece of advice that the author has put into this book is simply this, ?The principles and concepts behind the techniques are more important than the techniques themselves,? or something along these lines. This is something that I have been saying for at least 20 years, ever since I first started teaching. Several principles of blocking and striking are discussed in this section.

5. Mobility, Stance, Facing, and the Finer Points of Staying Out of Jail

This section covers a lot of ground covering the subjects of proper stance, the use of footwork, and keeping and maintaining the proper distance between you and your opponent.

6. Grappling, Throwing, and Escapes

This section covers a lot of very good information on the subject of grappling and throwing. I really enjoyed the information in this section and it alone is worth the price of this book.

7. Selecting an Appropriate Martial Art for your Personal Study

This I found to be one of the best sections in the entire book. Here the author takes an honest fairly well-informed look at the various martial arts and the numerous factors one should consider when trying to decide which ones to study.
Overall I found Peyton?s book to be outstanding and one that I am proud to have in my own personal library. I find Peyton?s approach to the subject refreshing and honest and one that I personally hold in high regard.

I strongly recommend that you purchase this book and not only read the words that Peyton has written, but perhaps more importantly the ones that were written between the printed lines.

Why Choose Jujitsu Over Any Other Martial Art?

Getting a good Jujitsu Foundation

Judo was the first martial art I ever learned. I was a scrawny kid, with braces. Not quite a book worm, but rapidly on my way to being a teenaged couch potato. My Dad would tell me to run out and play, and I?d stay inside playing on my video game console.

One day I came home from school, and found that my Dad had replaced the video game console with a box, saying ?Take a shower, and meet me in the garage at 4.? The box had a martial arts suit (I later learned it was called a ?gi?) and my Dad took me to a martial arts class that afternoon, where we both went through the basics of learning judo. It was amazingly cool to do something like that with my Dad. I can still remember the first time I threw him on the mat ? he still outweighed me by a good 40 pounds then! He looked so surprised to be laying on his back, then just grinned at me.

Fast forward more years than I like to admit, and I?m thankful that my Dad dragged my sorry butt off the couch. I went from judo to jujitsu, to a bunch of kung fu styles, and now work as a freelance journalist covering martial arts, as well as teaching those classes at the local dojo. Dad still does martial arts, but has moved on to softer styles like Wing Chun, because his joints aren?t as limber as they used to be, and he doesn?t think it?s as fun to be thrown on the mat now that I outweigh him by 40 pounds!

And, well, as all the philosophy stuff says, things come full circle. I?m now teaching the introductory jujitsu classes at the school. In some ways, it?s kind of challenging, I have to filter out the things I?ve learned from other styles, and focus on the basics. Jujitsu grew out of Japan, as opposed to the Chinese Kung Fu styles I learned later, and focuses on a stable stance, grapples, and throws. It doesn?t focus so much on punches, because it was meant to be practiced by a man wearing armor, and punches against another person wearing armor are pretty futile, while putting him on his back makes him considerably more vulnerable.

It should be noted that I teach jujitsu, rather than its sporting form, ?judo?, because I want to teach the full on martial art, and give someone a basis for learning more martial arts in the future, rather than a ?recipe book? of throws, grapples, and such designed to win points in a tournament. I think jujitsu has a lot of practical use as a self defense martial art, mostly because it focuses on joint locks rather than throws. A joint lock is a very practical method of disarming someone; in its most basic sense, it?s a means of applying force to a joint in the way that, mechanically, it?s not meant to know. Anyone who?s had their thumb turned ?round in a Hawaiian handcuff has had a joint lock done on them. The nice thing about joint locks is that they even out strength differentials quite well ? originally, they were used to make an armed and armored foe drop a weapon, making him more vulnerable on a battle field, but they?re quite useful for dealing with muggers, or bullies in a school yard.

Anyway, it?s kind of neat, going back to my foundations, my first ?real? martial art. I?m wondering if I?ll see any father/son pairings at the school I teach at.

Bokken (Literary Links to the Orient)

Bokken (Literary Links to the Orient)
Dave Lowry frequently travels throughout Asia to research its culture and history, and has written several books about Japan and the budo. He started writing for Black Belt magazine more than 20 years ago and has shared his traditional take on the martial arts world in a monthly column called Karate Way since 1986.

In Bokken: Art of the Japanese Sword, Lowry focuses his expertise on the techniques and history of the bokken--the wooden training sword used by both ancient samurai and today's swordsmen. According to Lowry, training with the bokken is important on two levels for the modern practitioner: "On one, he builds the physical stamina, rhythms, and adroit body movements of traditional swordsmanship. On the other, he achieves something of the animating spirit of the traditional swordsman. He is, through the refinement of his practice, linked in a very real way to his past, for it is from the principles of swordsmanship that the budo of today have based their teachings, no matter what their present form."

Bokken: Art of the Japanese Sword couples Lowry's concise, eloquent writing style with more than 100 hundred technique photographs to provide the reader with the traditional and modern perspectives of this vital, historically rich practice tool.

Angry White Pyjamas: A Scrawny Oxford Poet Takes Lessons From The Tokyo Riot Police

Angry White Pyjamas: A Scrawny Oxford Poet Takes Lessons From The Tokyo Riot Police

Adrift in Tokyo, translating obscene rap lyrics for giggling Japanese high school girls,, "thirtynothing" Robert Twigger comes to a revelation about himself: He has never been fit nor brave. Guided by his roommates, Fat Frank and Chris, he sets out to cleanse his body and mind. Not knowing his fist from his elbow, the author is drawn into the world of Japanese martial arts, joining the Tokyo Riot Police on their yearlong, brutally demanding course of budo training, where any ascetic motivation soon comes up against bloodstained "white pyjamas" and fractured collarbones. In Angry White Pyjamas, Twigger blends, the ancient with the modern--the ultratraditionalism, ritual, and violence of the dojo (training academy) with the shopping malls, nightclubs, and scenes of everyday Tokyo life in the 1990s--to provide a brilliant, bizarre glimpse of life in contemporary Japan.
