Even the best dojos have gaping holes in their training. They fail to teach people how to fight in realistic situations.

I studied for eight years to achieve my black belt, and I was never required to spar or to do techniques in street clothes.

(I?ve corrected this by working out in pants, shoes, and long sleeve dress shirts.)

I was taught to kick in ?tabbies,? light socks or in bare feet, not in cowboy boots or loafers or running shoes, which I usually wear.

If I?m being attacked do you think I?ll be able to ask my foe to hold off for a second while I remove my shoes?

Never was I ?attacked? at close range in an elevator, or in a parking lot. In fact, there was no ?field training? at all.
