Learn The Devastating Martial Arts That Made Bruce Lee Famous

In order to learn Wing Chun, it is important to understand the history behind it. There are many versions of how Wing Chun came into being. Some say it was started by Ng Mui, a Buddhist nun who developed it over 300 years ago in southern China and named it after her student, Yim Wing Chun. While others believe it was started by a Shoalin monk in the early to mid 1700s.

Wing Chun was almost unheard of anywhere else but China until 1950 when Grandmaster Yip Man began teaching in Hong Kong and his students grew in number. One on these students was the late Bruce Lee who became a master of the form and used Wing Chun as the basis for Jeet Kune Do or the Way of the Intercepting Fist, the style of martial arts he used in his ever popular movies. I can still remember being enthralled by ?Fists of Fury? and ?Enter the Dragon? with Bruce Lee using amazing skills of balance, graceful and agile movements and lightening fast strikes. His movies captivated a whole generation and encouraged many to study a martial art in one form or another.

I believe many women learn Wing Chun because of its simple form, relying on position, the use of energy and angles rather than size and power. With short explosive blows by the hand and very low kicks, people of small stature find learning Wing Chun a remarkable form of self-defense. You can be effective without any massive strength at all. You actually learn to use your attacker?s strength against them. When you learn Wing Chun, you will gain better balance and speed, you will learn about how to position your body and how to refine your movements to their best advantage, mostly getting in close to your attacker. In Wing Chun the principal of the closest point between two points is a straight line holds true. Wing Chun is generally used for defence rather than attack and when first developed strikes were meant to be fatal and pointed at areas such as the throat, eyes and stomach. Many countries have their elite military personal learn Wing Chun, not only for self-defense but also for the quiet execution of the movements in arm to arm combat.

It does not take long to learn Wing Chun, in fact it is quicker than most other forms and you can learn to defend yourself in a fairly shot period of time, but true of all martial arts you can practice it for the rest of your life. When you learn wing Chun you also gain health benefits as the meditative side of Wing Chun is a great stress reliever as Wing Chun is also about using your mind, learning to control impulses, relax into the movement and sense your balance, strength and power. As your fitness levels improve so to does your overall health.

Whether you learn Wing Chun for self-defense, sport or simply as an exercise and meditation tool it will be a valuable asset for the rest of your life.

The Myth of The Ultimate Martial Arts Drill

There seems to be a prevalent myth that a common martial arts
drill is some kind of ultimate drill. That if you become adept at
this drill, you'll be able to defend yourself in any type of attack
in the street. Martial arts instructors have developed drills to
improve this drill and others have made it an integral part
of a sport.

Have you figured out what the drill to which I'm referring? That's
right ladies and gentlemen, the ultimate, the one and only - spaaarrrriiiinnnngggg!

For the purposes of this article, we will define sparring as an
abstract martial arts drill in which two or more partners exchange
attacking, defensive and counter-attacking techniques and tactics
in a non-synchronized manner.

All drills, including sparring, have positive and negative attributes.
I'd like to point out some of these attributes, both positive and
negative to bring this good but sometimes misunderstood drill to
the level and categories it belongs.

Positive Aspects of Sparring

Sparring is an Abstract Drill

The drill is flexible enough to train for a variety of situations
and environments.

General defensive, offensive and counter-offensive tactics
are developed and improved.

Distances can be experienced and tested of a variety of partner body types.

A variety of strikes and combinations can be experienced and executed.

The timing between blocks and or evasive movements and counter-striking
can be observed, executed and improved.

The drill has positive aerobic and anaerobic factors similar to a
type of interval training in which the athlete jogs then sprints a
prescribed distance or time at intervals.

Sparring is executed by a number of styles and seems a good
basis for different styles of martial arts to both train and compete together.

Negative Aspects of Sparring

Sparring is an Abstract Drill
The drill is flexible enough to train for a variety of situations
and environments.
There is not enough repetition of techniques and tactics to
increase learning speed in a reasonable amount of time as
compared to single focus drills.

General defensive, offensive and counter-offensive tactics are
developed and improved.
There is not enough repetition of techniques and tactics to
increase learning speed in a reasonable amount of time as
compared to single focus drills.

Distances can be experienced and tested of a variety of partner body types.
The wide variety of experiences are a positive aspect of sparring,
however my own experience is that often times the number of partners are limited.

A variety of strikes and combinations can be experienced and executed.
Strikes and combinations can be experienced and executed,
however in my experience partners tend to only execute those
techniques and combinations the partners are comfortable with
in order to avoid being struck. This tends to limit experiences
in both observation and execution.

The timing between blocks and or evasive movements and
counter-striking can be observed, executed and improved.
There is not enough repetition of techniques and tactics to
increase learning speed in a reasonable amount of time as
compared to single focus drills.

Sparring is executed by a number of styles and seems a good basis
for different styles of martial arts to both train and compete together.
The schools which spar a great deal will have an unfair
advantage over those schools which treat sparring like any other drill.
This would be comparable to students thinking their style is
better by comparing how well breaking-holds are executed or any other drill.

The drill has positive aerobic and anaerobic factors similar
to a type of interval training in which the athlete jogs then
sprints a prescribed distance or time at intervals.
From strictly a self-defense point of view, anaerobic capacity
is more important than aerobic capacity. A long sparring session
doesn't emphasize the intensity of a self-defense situation.

Variations of Sparring to Overcome Negative Aspects

I'm the first to admit, despite its weaknesses, I love sparring.
Well they don't call me The Drillman for nothing. So I developed
several variations of sparring to focus on various aspects of
self-defense training and compensate for some of the weaknesses.

Repeat Sparring
This helps me quite a bit. If my partner tags me with a strike,
he/she repeats the same combination over and over until I develop
a block and or evasive movement. This benefits my partner as
he/she repeats an effective combination and it benefits me as I learn
to avoid being hit by an effective combination.

Taking Away Weapons
Remember I mentioned martial artists tend use only techniques
and combinations of techniques they are comfortable with
(okay okay with which they are comfortable for you English teachers out there)?

Now we take away those favorites techniques and combinations by removing weapons.

The possibilities are only limited by your imagination

When attacking you may only use these combinations of weapons

All

Left arm right leg

Right arm left leg

Right side weapons

Left side weapons

Left arm

Right arm

Right leg

Left leg

When defending you may only use these combinations of tools

All

Left arm right leg

Right arm left leg

Right side

Left side

Left arm

Right arm

Right leg and evasive

Left leg and evasive

Add or take away evasive

Evasive only

Now mix them up

You're attacks and defenses are unlimited

You're attacks are limited by a set of guideline above but not you're defenses

You're defenses are limited by a set of guideline above but not you're attacks

You're defenses and attacks are limited by the same set of guideline above

You're defenses and attacks are limited by different sets of guidelines above.

And the list goes on.

Think think think. Add a safely knife right in the middle of sparing.
One student throws another that's sparring a safety baseball bat
another student joins another.

Tai Chi like slow motion free for all with three martial artists.

This is a great drill done slowly. Temporary teams against one
student are formed, but you have to keep an eye on your
temporary partner as well.

I've actually got a lot more drills than this , but many of them
do not match the topic of this article, my carpal tunnel hands
are getting tired, and the drills don't match our stated definition
of sparring. Feel free however to check out my printable ebook,
Bringing the Martial Artist Out from Within for more drills.

Thank you for your support. If you have martial arts drills or

Only Real Martial Arts Stop Rapists

One of my favorite stories to tell is about the time my brother-in-law?s girlfriend got her black belt in karate?

She had her big flashy test?kicked the bag?sparred other girls (and a couple of guys that looked like girls!) with the foam booties and gloves on?did her kata with the appropriate ?snap? in her movements?very nice.

Now, I?m not a complete jerk, so I let her have her moment. Congratulated her, hobnobbed with the karate ?master?, and ate a piece of the sheet cake with little icing karate dudes on it?.

That was until a couple of months later at a family graduation party when she began to tell all the girls how the type of ?karate? she studies is great for fitness (ok), fun (ok), and self defense (BZZZZZ!).

I had stood what I could, but I couldn?t stands it no more?

I walked right up into the middle of the gaggling girls, singled her out and flat out asked her, ?Tell me the truth? If a 225 pound man attacked and tried to rape and kill you, can you 100%, honestly say that you would know what to do? Could you save your own life??

There was a deathly quiet pause as every single girl in the room visualized that horrible situation in their own minds. Then came the same answer I?ve heard from every single women martial artist I?ve ever met in my life who doesn?t train with us?

?Ummm?I guess not.?

Here in the United States there seems to be a government agency looking into just about every consumer industry in an effort to protect people from scammers, hucksters, and other assorted con men or corporate swindle.

Unfortunately, for women who are looking for a martial arts style that will provide them with a way to defend themselves, there is no government agency licensing or even looking into instructors or the proven effectiveness of the claims.

Therefore there is an over abundance of inexperienced, untrained, liars who claim they are teaching self-defense. These frauds will often teach a style that sounds and perhaps even looks good on the mat, but lacks any value in real combat.

Moreover, dealing with criminal rapist scum is no time for a woman to find out that her ?training? was really just cardio kickboxing in disguise? So share the following information with a woman you care for.
Examining the profiles of rapists gives incite into a dangerous enemy.

The Power-assertive rapist considers himself manly and is the one most likely to commit date rapes. This type makes up 44% of rapists and will try to con a victim and gain her trust, but will have no problem using whatever level of physical force he needs to take control.

The Anger-retaliatory rapist hates women and will look to brutalize and punish them. He looks for targets of opportunity and will most likely beat you unconscious then commit rape. This animal makes up 33% of rapists and is easily enraged.

Power-reassurance rapists account for 21% of rapes and often spies on or stalks his victims since he lacks the confidence to have a normal relationship with women. In his twisted fantasy, he sees himself and the victim as lovers, and will force her to wear lingerie and kiss her while seeing the attack as lovemaking. However, using violence is not out of the question if it comes down to making a woman give in to his demands.

The Anger-excitation is the worst of the lot. A sexual sadist, this sick bastard only makes up 5% of all rapists. He has his attacks preplanned and victims can be women he knows or just spots haphazardly on the street. He derives sexual pleasure from inflicting pain and will tie up, gag and torture women for days on end. So vile is this creature that he will even film or photograph his victims so he can relive the attacks. He is the hardest to catch of the group because he usually kills his victims when he?s through.

During an attack your mind will be racing and you won?t be thinking clearing about what kind of rapist you are dealing with and what approach to take, but what all experts agree on is that a ?properly trained? woman who fights back early DOUBLES their chance of escape?AGAINST ANY SIZE OR STRENGTH ATTACKER.

The Department of Justice reported that 93,934 women were forcibly raped in 2005 (They?re still calculating ?06)?These numbers are completely unacceptable as women can and should know how to defend themselves.

In Abraham Maslow?s Hierarchy of Needs, safety is listed right after breathing and eating. Personal protection is too important to be left to the police alone, or to depend on others for help.

Teaching and learning a martial art is ok as it has plenty of redeeming physical, cultural, social, & mental benefits. However, what people (especially women) need to understand, is that 99% of martial arts are NOT legitimate methods of self-defense.

A former soldier, cancer survivor, mercenary, barroom bouncer, educator, and hand-to-hand combat instructor, Chris ?Lt. X? Pizzo stormed onto the scene in 2002 with the release of his much anticipated ?Accelerated Battlefield Combatives? hand-to-hand combat learning system. For more information on Chris ?Lt. X? Can Mixed Martial Arts Survive With Only One Big Show?

I could feel a movement in the force.

Seriously, I felt like Luke Skywalker detecting Darth Vader. Except this time it was Dana White buying Pride FC.

And to be fair and accurate, it was Dana White using the Fertitas Brothers money to buy the struggling Japanese promotion.

It has the underground MMA forums buzzing. Can MMA survive with only one big show?

It's amazing how a group of pimply-faced teenagers pretending to be adults on an anonymous chat forum can stir up so much testosterone. The arguements ranged from geo-political, to criminal (the Yakuza!), to the conspiratorial, to invoking the RICO act and jailing White for his crimes against humanity.

At the end of the day, there is truly only one threat to MMA.

Boredom.

If you watch reruns of Pride FC on Fight Network, or old K-1, or ancient UCC from Quebec, you get to peer into a time machine to the earlier days of this sport. I saw the Butterbean vs Gomi match the other day. The first time I saw it I laughed. You'd never see a 350 pounds man vs a 150 pound man in the UFC. Or would you?

But the novelty of the match wore off super quickly. And frankly I can't watch it again because I know how it ends. There is no dazzling displays of skill, technique or MMA wizardry.

There is a place for David vs. Goliath freakshow matches...but that place is rapidly shrinking.

What match do YOU want to see? Butterbean vs. Gomi or George St. Pierre vs. Matt Hughes Part two? I blew out a tonsil screaming for GSP in that match. And the promise of part three has me forking over the PPV dollars, guaranteed.

My message to Dana White is simple. You have been entrusted with a responsibility to this sport. You've looked like a genius so far. Just don't be boring.

Personally, I can't wait to see what mixed martial arts looks like by 2010!

Samurai: An Illustrated History

Samurai: An Illustrated History
Samurai: An Illustrated History brings the violent, tumultuous, and, at the same time, elegant world of the medieval Japanese samurai to life. With a general introduction that examines the origins of the samurai and their rise to power, Samurai presents a chronological coverage of samurai history detailing the main battles, personnel, and general themes. Additional chapters are studies of samurai armor and weaponry, fortifications, and the changes in strategy and armor upon the introduction of firearms and cannon. All chapters are illustrated by photographs of battle re-enactments meticulously conducted by the enthusiastic historical re-enactment societies of Japan, and by line drawings of fortifications and armor. Samurai vividly details the long bloody era of the samurai, when sons killed their fathers, brothers attacked their brothers, wives betrayed their husbands and hosts their guests, and the forces of the samurai rulers destroyed those of the emperors and the monasteries. The samurai fought for property, lands, and money, and only rarely for honor--Samurai tells that compelling story with vigor.

Medieval Sword & Shield: The Combat System of Royal Armouries MS I.33

Medieval Sword & Shield: The Combat System of Royal Armouries MS I.33
Medieval Sword & Shield is a fascinating interpretation of the earliest known fighting treatise in Europe, Royal Armouries RA I.33, also published by Chivalry Bookshelf as The Medieval Art of Swordsmanship (ISBN 1891448382).

In Medieval Sword & Shield, Stephen Hand and Paul Wagner decrypt the sword and buckler techniques presented in the color treatise, explaining the concepts that underly the system and providing photographic examples to explain their interpretation to the reader.

This book looks at a unique time in the Western Martial Arts, c. 1290, as the sword and buckler were used for civilian defense on the roads of Europe.

Clearly presented, this book promises to become a classic of Western Martial Arts, of interest to historical fencers, SCA combatants, martial artists, and students of medieval history.

Master Lam's Walking Chi Kung

Master Lam's Walking Chi Kung

People who must sit or stand long hours at work can now thank the Buddhist monks who centuries ago faced the same problems in their enforced periods of meditation, and developed Chi Kung, a powerful program of energy cultivation to heal distracted minds and tired bodies. Internationally known instructor Master Lam introduces a special form of Chi Kung that focuses on movement and walking. Each move is shown in a stop-action photo with a caption and lets you stay in place until you feel the tension disappear. Breathing, stretching, and mental relaxation come together in a natural way that harmonizes the six directional forces of up/down, left/right, and forward/backward. Your legs and knees, the first part of your body to age, receive special life-lengthening exercises.

Master Wing Chun Martial Arts By Watching Movie Clips

I have always been a huge martial arts fan. From watching all those cheesy dubbed films from the seventies as a kid, to watching Jackie Chan kick some tail, I have loved it all. I remember thinking, man, wouldn?t that be so great if I could do that stuff? Like fly over some tables and knock the stuffing out of the bad guys? Or take on thirty fighters at once and creamed them easily? How cool is that?

Alas, it was not to be back then. You know how life is, one thing leads to another and then another. You forget about all the crazy little dreams you had as a kid because you have responsibilities as an adult. Don?t we all have them? You have to work. At a real job. Not some fun job where you do what you want but a job that pays the bills. I did it just like most people do.

But get this. I found a great way to follow my dream of being a hard swinging Kung Fu artist by watching these awesome movies. The kung fu style is called Wing Chun and they are something else! I tell you, these are so fun to watch, so thrilling, I can not imagine being without them.

Believe it or not, you can learn everything you need to know about how to fight in martial arts by watching these movie clips. This style is the major southern Chinese style that was perfected by Bruce Lee himself and now it is available to us in the United States. What a wonderful invention the DVD player is! I get to train and focus my energy like I never thought I could. Without these videos and Wing Chun movie clips, I never would have the time or money to learn these techniques.

Going to a local place, a dojo if you will, costs a lot of time and money. Time and money I do not have. What better way to kick some tail than by staying at home and having all the time I need? This is the best way I have ever seen to learn how to master the art of martial combat. The movie clips are easy to watch, fun and entertaining. It may seem too easy, too simple, but in my experience, the best things in life are just that: simple.

I found myself growing stronger and stronger each day as I watched these movie clips. The instructions were easy to understand and easy to follow along. I never felt rushed or under pressure like I might at a fighting studio. It is a great feeling, knowing I am following my dream every time I turn on the TV and start learning Wing Chun martial arts.

What kids learn from martial arts.

Martial Arts are becoming more popular as the years go on and they do provide us with the skills that we need in order to protect ourselves form others. However, when it comes to kids and Martial Arts, some parents are wary of whether or not a Martial Arts school is for them. How do you know if your child will like the school and just how do you know it will teach them all of the right things?

Martial Arts and What They Teach Our Kids

There is a misconception that Martial Arts schools teach our children to fight. Obviously all Martial Arts consist of some kind of physical activity, but it is purely taught so that our kids can protect themselves against harm.

In a world packed full of danger it is always a good idea to get our children to be able to look after themselves. At the end of the day there is only so much a parent can teach their child but once they get out into the open world, they are literally on their own. That means that they need to be able to protect themselves and Martial Arts schools do help them to do that.

Now, there are obviously going to be some kids who just want to cause trouble. However, generally Martial Arts are only learned by those who are serious about the practice. All Martial Arts require some form of focus and kids who are just out to cause trouble and fight all the time will not be able to stick with Martial Arts for long.

Martial Arts schools never teach children to fight. If anything they teach the opposite, as using the skills that you have learned through Martial Arts to just simply fight, is opposed.

So just what are Martial Arts schools teaching our children then? Well, they teach them to look after themselves, to stay focused, to have a higher self confidence and overall to keep calm. There is definitely nothing sinister going on and Martial Arts classes are extremely safe to leave your children in. You just have to make sure that you find a good school and that you do not get sucked in by the many fake Martial Arts schools out there.

Overall Martial Arts schools are good for our kids and they do not teach anything dodgy. If you do have a child enrolled in a Martial Arts school and you are not particularly happy with the attitude they are developing, then you should really consider swapping schools. It is all a matter of doing your research and finding one to suit you and your child. You should eventually find one and you can rest safe in the knowledge that your child is bettering themselves and learning to become more protected against the world.

New Fist of Fury / Snake Fist Fighter

New Fist of Fury / Snake Fist Fighter
Two films from Jackie Chan's early adult movie career (he appeared in over 20 films as a child) place him firmly in the '70s kung fu genre pantheon made internationally popular by Bruce Lee. Chan himself was to assume Lee's position as kung fu superstar, made evident by his role in New Fist of Fury (1976), the somewhat clunky but classic sequel to The Chinese Connection (on which Chan worked on as a stunt man). Directed by Wei Lo, New Fist of Fury picks up with two siblings fleeing a Japanese occupied Shanghai for Taiwan, where their grandfather runs a Kung Fu school. However, a Japanese martial-arts teacher has plans to run all the schools under his own name, eventually killing the grandfather. Chan plays a young thief who, at first, wants nothing to do with fighting but then finds his calling as the new leader of rebels against the Japanese occupation.

Snake Fist Fighter (1971) was Chan's first visible role. At age 17, Chan plays Jackie, a young man who is intrigued with martial arts, but forbidden by his father to learn. He meets a beggar (Siu Tien Yuen) who offers to teach him. Jackie learns in secret until local mobsters put the squeeze on the family business. Originally shelved, this film was released years later featuring scenes with a Chan look-a-like. Although these early films don't showcase Chan's comic charisma as much as his martial-arts skills, they mark the beginning of the long, successful career of one of the world's most popular action stars. --Shannon Gee
